We’re looking for a remote Full-Stack Software Engineer to join the Through the Word team and help us on our mission to equip the world to read the Bible, understand it, apply it, and make it a habit… together.
Who are you?
- You are familiar with the Through the Word app and looking to put your skills towards this God-mission that is changing lives around the world.
- Your reading includes the Bible and engineering documentation.
- You are experienced at front-end and back-end Javascript and popular frameworks like React.
- You are experienced working with AWS and Serverless architecture. You’ve built APIs and used AWS services like API Gateway, Lambda, and DynamoDB.
- You know the appropriate time to write clean maintainable code and when to get the job done quick and dirty.
- You like documenting your work.
- You like improving systems and making things more efficient.
- You enjoy learning additional languages, libraries and frameworks and improving your engineering craft.
- You are meticulous and detailed-oriented but work at a reasonable pace.
- You work and collaborate effectively in a remote environment with asynchronous and synchronous communication.
Who are we?
Through the Word is a nonprofit content-centered ministry. We provide a simple daily Bible habit with audio guides for every chapter in the Bible. Through the Word is distributed on multiple platforms like the Through the Word App, Through the Word Podcast, and the YouVersion Bible app.
We are a small remote team with a variety of backgrounds in church ministry, business, and engineering.
Our core values:
- The Bible is our minimum standard.
- Humility in self, Hunger in mission, Happiness in life
- Act in integrity and love, always
What about our technology?
Through the Word is not a technology company but technology is essential to accomplish our mission.
We hold technologies loosely and understand that there is a lifecycle to our current software and mobile app. We are more concerned with reaching our listeners in the most effective way than championing any specific language or technology.
We don’t want to build a large monolithic codebase and we don’t like rebuilding the wheel. We like using existing SaaS. We like decoupling. We like flexibility. When no-code apps get the job done, we use tools like Airtable, Notion, and Zapier. When we need custom apps we prefer popular Javascript frameworks like React for the front-end and Serverless services on AWS.
What would you do?
Let me be honest and interject…
Our engineering team is small… one-person-small (plus occasional contractors and interns).
👋 Hi, I’m Zach, software engineer at TTW and you would be working directly with me.

You would be the second full-time engineer working on our rapidly-growing app which means you will be expected to contribute results on your own.
Now, I won’t leave you hanging. In fact, I love to collaborate, train interns, pair-program, document, keep everything as transparent as possible, and have lots of fun… but I want to let you know what to expect.
I’m looking for an entrepreneurial code-ninja who can get things done, wear multiple hats and shape the culture of our engineering team.
This isn’t a narrowly-defined position. You will be doing a variety of things that have a direct kingdom impact on 130,000 daily listeners and over 250,000 app users.
I am unabashedly a generalist with areas of weakness. I need you to bring your strengths to the table so together we can make the Through the Word app and platforms the best possible experience for our listeners.
Anyway, off my soapbox, here are some specific hors d’oeuvres to whet your appetite:
- You would work on the Through the Word App (JavaScript, React Native, AWS Serverless) to fix bugs and add features.
- You would work on new APIs using AWS and Serverless architecture.
- You would connect existing SaaS together via APIs and Cloud functions, webhooks, and Zapier (e.g. Connect Airtable database to a DynamoDB database with a Lambda function).
- You would work on new platforms and apps to distribute Through the Word content.
- You would help document existing and new software.
- You would write tests for existing and new software.
- You would travel a few times a year to meet with our team, meet up with partners, and attend our yearly team retreat.
What are the perks?
- Remote work and flexible schedule
- Competitive pay and performance-based bonus structure
- Health insurance
- 401k
- Yearly team retreat
- Purposeful work with direct kingdom impact
- Collaboration with Christ followers
